Choosing a plumber

Plumbing credentials and insurance: what to check

Keep business licences, specialist qualifications, insurance and directory membership separate when choosing a plumber.

Match the business to its documentation

Ask for the trading name, responsible business contact and the licence or registration details relevant to your job and location. A directory profile is a starting point for a conversation.

Business registration, trade membership and a plumbing licence have different purposes. Do not treat a logo or membership badge as evidence that a business can carry out every specialist task.

Check the relevant authority

Requirements vary by jurisdiction and type of work. Ask which authority regulates the proposed plumbing, water-heater, gas or backflow work and use that authority’s own register where available. Confirm that the name, scope and status match the person or business doing the work.

Ask about permits and inspections for this project before authorising work. This guide does not state a universal licensing rule or replace local authority guidance.

Ask about insurance for the proposed work

Request current insurance details and ask the insurer or broker how to confirm coverage where needed. Discuss the work, property type, subcontractors and any relevant exclusions.

PlumberPick records information supplied by businesses. A listed-on-directory badge is a link to a profile and is not independent verification, insurance cover or a guarantee.

Keep the evidence with your quote

Keep the written scope, qualification details, insurance information and contact names together. Ask for an explanation if information is missing, expired or inconsistent.

Use the quote comparison worksheet to record questions before choosing a provider.
