Start with the same job brief

Send every plumber the same symptoms, location, property type, photographs and access information. Distinguish an urgent fault from an installation or planned upgrade. Ask whether a site assessment is needed before a firm price can be provided.

Use our assessment guide if the cause or extent of the problem is still unknown. A short message is useful for triage; it does not replace an inspection.

Compare the work behind the total

Check the proposed diagnosis, pipe or fixture materials, make and model where relevant, removal, isolation, testing, cleanup and making good. Ask what is retained, replaced and excluded.

Clarify access through walls, floors, cabinets or outside ground before comparing totals. Ask who handles any required approvals and inspections, and how unforeseen conditions or additional work will be priced.

Put three proposals side by side

Enter contractor names and mark each scope item as included, excluded or not stated. Keep notes about differences. The worksheet identifies questions; it does not score a contractor or calculate a market price.

Confirm price and written terms

Ask whether the quoted amount includes taxes, materials, labour, call-out fees, disposal and any after-hours surcharge. Confirm payment stages, quote validity, scheduling and the process for approving changes.

Keep product warranties separate from the plumber’s workmanship warranty. Ask who handles a claim and which conditions or exclusions apply. Check credentials and insurance before accepting the proposal.
